Nuclear

CEE Bankwatch Network is working to prevent a potential nuclear comeback across central and eastern Europe. The nuclear industry has managed to plant the myth that nuclear power does not contribute to climate change and at the same time is remarkably shy about the horrendous waste, safety and financial implications that are attached to nuclear power generation. The huge investment sums required by the nuclear industry would be better spent on truly sustainable energy efficiency and renewable energy developments.

In the year of the twentieth anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, Bankwatch’s nuclear campaigning and advocacy work concentrates on:

• new nuclear build receiving public financial support through Euratom and export credit agencies. Such projects are Belene NPP in Bulgaria and Cernavoda 2 in Romania
• the decommissioning of old, dangerous nuclear reactors in Lithuania (Ignalina 1 and 2), Bulgaria (Kozloduy 3 and 4) and Slovakia (Bohunice 1 and 2).

Recently announced proposals to develop new generation reactors at Ignalina and Cernavoda are also closely followed by our coordinators, as are suggestions that the IFIs are starting to fall for the “clean energy” spin of the nuclear industry.

Currently no international public development bank provides direct support for new nukes, and Bankwatch is working to ensure that this continues. We also seek to expose and campaign against cases where public money is being used to provide indirect support for the nuclear industry.
