The National Ecological Centre of Ukraine (EcoCentre)

The National Ecological Centre of Ukraine (EcoCentre) was founded on 30 August 1991. We were one of the first non-governmental organisations at the national level registered in the newly independent Ukraine. EcoCentre now has 24 local branches throughout Ukraine, and in 2003 the Youth Branch of NECU resumed its activities.

NECU's mission is to work for the creation of a sound environment and to improve the quality of people's lives in Ukraine. Such activities are based on supporting the independence of Ukraine, building civil society and promoting sustainable development in the country.

Our experts have been actively involved in the development of Ukrainian environmental and nature protecting legislation, the drafting of a number of state programs and the establishing of many protected areas in Ukraine. We have also participated in a number of Environmental Impact Assessments and initiated a series of public hearings. EcoCentre is also active in promoting sustainable energy production, and continues to oppose the expansion of the nuclear industry in Ukraine. EcoCentre is an active participant of the Ukrainian NGOs Working Group on Climate Change and Ukrainian Rivers Network.

Our activities are not limited by the territory of Ukraine - NECU is a member of IUCN and CEE Bankwatch Network, is a focal point of Global Relief International in Ukraine, and collaborates with other environmental NGOs nationally and internationally.
