Hnuti DUHA
Hnuti DUHA was founded in 1989 as a local environmental initiative in the city of Brno. Since then it has grown into an influential national organisation with dozen active local chapters all over the Czech Republic and two centres (co-ordination in Brno, media and lobbying in Prague). In 1994 it was accepted as the Czech member group of Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) and in 1995 it was among founding members of CEE Bankwatch Network. Hnuti DUHA addresses human values to promote citizens' participation in decision making and defending nature. Its national activities are divided into three broad programmes: energy (ending the Czech Republic's use of nuclear energy, protection of communities endangered by the lignite mining, pushing for energy conservation, promotion of act on the promotion of renewable energy, forests (reforestation, natural tree composition, presence of predators and not purely economical management), public finance and environment (focusing on public spendings, including EU funds and IFI loans, mainly in the sector of transport and environment.
Other activities include stimulating the public debate on cross-sectoral issues, like for example environmental tax reform, clean jobs, economic development in line with the nevironmental protection. Hnuti DUHA is also publishing a monthly magazine, Seventh Generation , which has found readers not only in the environmental movement, but also among influential cultural and political personalities all over the Czech and Slovak republics.
